Why Cats Have Vertical Pupils
A cat's vertical pupil is not simply a better light valve. Its shape is strongly associated with a particular ecological niche: small, low-to-the-ground ambush predators that are active across a wide range of light levels.

The useful mechanism is depth perception. A vertical slit produces direction-dependent blur: horizontal contours become more sensitive to defocus while vertical contours remain relatively sharp. Combined with binocular stereopsis, this gives a crouched predator two complementary distance cues for judging a short pounce.
The height of the animal matters. In the 2015 comparative study that made this connection famous, vertically elongated pupils were especially associated with shorter ambush predators. Lions and tigers, despite being cats, have round pupils -- a nice reminder that "cats have vertical pupils" is not the biological rule; ecological geometry is.
Banks et al. reported this size relationship among 65 frontal-eyed ambush predators:

The 42 cm value is an analysis threshold, not a law of nature. The proposed mechanism is geometric: a short viewpoint near the ground gets a stronger blur gradient for judging pounce distance, while taller ambush predators get less benefit from that cue. The same paper also notes that a domestic cat's pupil area can change by about 135-fold, compared with roughly 15-fold for humans.
Why believe it?
Banks and colleagues compared pupil shape with ecological niche across terrestrial species and then modeled the optical consequences of different pupil geometries. Vertical pupils were strongly associated with ambush predation and lower eye height.
